Why I Decided To Blog

And how exactly I am figuring this whole thing out.

So. How exactly do you start these things?
That is pretty much where I am in this whole ‘starting a blog’ thing. Sure, I have an Instagram, Facebook, and I have spent my free time scrolling through the world of Tumblr, but creating something with the intent of actually reaching out to the world? To people I don’t know and have never met? Yeah, usually I block the first friend request from the creepy guy that lives halfway across the country requesting to be friends on Facebook. This will be a bit different.

Though, after writing, rewriting, and changing my blog’s name, title, and profile picture about a thousand times trying to make the perfect blog, I have come to the ultimate conclusion:

I’m gonna wing it.

Seriously though, how are you ever going to get started if you… don’t get started?

I am someone who has about a billion topics floating around in my consciousness all day. They could probably be all summed up into the broad spectrum of… self improvement? We shall see.

So, without further adu, here are the reasons why I’m beginning a blog, and perhaps some reasons you should as well if you’re contemplating it.

1. You are opinionated.

So, you hate the small talk, or the one line Instagram posts. You’ve got a couple of topics you’re really passionate about, and the minute you hear even a whisper of anything remotely close in relevance, you’re talking up a storm. Perhaps it is exercise, baking, politics, or Harry Styles. Who knows? Either way, you’ve got a lot of passion and opinions, and let’s be honest, not everyone would prefer to hear your ramblings everyday. So, give yourself an environment to be yourself and ramble on!

2. Maybe you’re looking for some extra cash?

I am sure you have seen or heard of many people using blogging as a means of income. Some are even quitting their day jobs to dedicate their time for improving their blog! It’s 2019, and it’s an actual thing. So, if writing and sharing your opinions is something you already love to do, why not find a way to make money from it? Do not get my wrong, it is not something that is instant cash, it takes dedication, motivation, and practice. So keep it up, the possibility is there.

3. You’d like to grow yourself personally and professionally.

Blogging can be so much more than just typing on a computer at a coffee shop and posting it on your pretty blog; it’s reaching out to new people, discovering your personal passions, inspiring others, practicing and building on your writing skills, and helping yourself in your professional communication skills. Also, if you have a business, it is a great means of promotion.  You are entering into a new working environment, with endless opportunities for improvement.

4. You are bored.

So, I am NOT saying that you should be neglecting your life, but it truly is a great way to get a little ‘escape’ time. You are living the 9-5 life, with the hectic 30 minute commute to work, the day to day routines are getting a bit bland. Diving into the world of blogging is a great way to get your mind cranking creatively. It encourages you to slow down, do that cliche thing of stopping and smelling the roses, and really become a bit more mindful to what you say, do, and think. Most blogs are uplifting and inspiring, littered with motivational tips and creative passion. So, get lost in your blog.

I hope you enjoyed just some of the reasons I have decided to begin blogging. We will see as this progresses, but I am very excited to let the many thoughts I have bouncing around in my head all day.

Why did you start blogging? Why do you want to begin a blog? Or maybe share why you haven’t?

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
